Hour 16. Using Components > Using the RadioButton Component

Using the RadioButton Component

Before we delve into radio buttons, I want to repeat that although the Flash UI Components are well designed and useful, they were created by regular people using Flash. If you see one that looks particularly interesting, feel free to venture inside and try to deconstruct how it works. In Hour 23, “Learning How to Learn Flash,” you'll develop some skills that will help you deconstruct others' files. For this section, however, we'll just look at how RadioButton, one of the Flash UI Components, can be used and applied to your projects.

With radio buttons (like the old mechanical buttons on car radios), you can select only one button at a time. Selecting which radio station to play requires that you pick one. If you change your mind, that's fine, but you can't play two stations at once. It's important to only use radio buttons for this kind of situation—for instance, when the user selects from mutually exclusive choices, such as male or female. On the other hand, check box buttons (for which there's another Flash UI Component) allow for multiple selections.
