Hour 16. Using Components > What Is a Component?

What Is a Component?

I described Components as Movie Clips with code in them. However, a Movie Clip with Actions inside (maybe on a button or in a keyframe) doesn't automatically become a Component. A Component is different because each instance can have unique parameters. Just as each occurrence of a gotoAndPlay Action has a unique value for the parameter specifying which frame to go to, Component instances have clip parameters that can be set uniquely.

You'll learn exactly how to create a Component later, but first you're going to use one of the Flash UI Components that come with Flash MX. Before you do this, I want to stress that these aren't “built-in” Components. A talented Flash programmer created these with Flash. Macromedia provides these Components to give you something useful in your projects, but they also serve to show you how they're made. You can make them your-self, too!
