Appendixes > Spokes on a Wheel

Spokes on a Wheel

1.
Follow the steps for a semicircle through step 6 so that you have a shape that looks like the following.

2.
Click and delete the fills and the extraneous outside lines.

3.
Copy just the vertical line and paste it off to the side.

4.
Use the Rotate option of the Transform tool to rotate the line 90 degrees.

5.
Click away from the line (to stop the rotating). Click the line once to select it; then click and drag from the center of the line.

6.
Snap your new line to the center of the vertical line.

7.
Paste it again for another vertical line—this time just rotate it to the first “snap” (which happens at 15 degrees). Drag this line from its center and snap it to the center of the circle.

8.
Continue to increase the rotation on the lines you paste by 15 degrees and snap them to the center of your circle, until it looks like the following figure.

9.
Use Shift+click to select all the lines without the circle.

10.
Copy and paste the lines off to the side.

11.
Select the lines and use the Rotate option of the Transform tool to rotate them 90 degrees.

12.
With all the lines selected, you can snap them to the center of the circle.

13.
Do you want to see a faster way to do the whole exercise? Draw the first spoke and select it; then open the Transform panel. Type 15 into the Rotate field and then repeatedly click the Copy and Apply Transform button. The result is shown in the following Figure.
