Hour 24. Publishing Your Creation > Using Named Anchor Frames

Using Named Anchor Frames

Flash MX adds a new feature (and corresponding template) called Named Anchors. In the past, Flash sites have been criticized because whenever you clicked the browser's back button, you were taken all the way out of the Flash site to the page visited before. You could break your Flash movie into lots of small pages (which is perfectly appropriate in some cases), but otherwise it was a known problem with Flash. Not any more! (Well, at least with 90% of the browsers out there.)

There's an HTML feature called anchors that let users navigate to subsections within a single page (really, anchors just automatically scroll the Web page). Say you place a tag in the middle of a Web page (by using the HTML <a name="midpoint">) you can then provide a link that jumps to that point (scrolls the page) with the HTML <a href="#midpoint">. Also, you can navigate directly to this midpoint from another page using the address index.html#midpoint for example. There's not much more to this HTML feature but to show you how Flash can tap into it.
