Task: Publish a Movie

In this task you'll quickly (and easily) publish a movie for viewing in a browser. Here are the steps to follow:

1.
In a new file, create a simple animation. Save the file into a new or empty folder (maybe a folder called Test on your Desktop). Call the file testmovie.fla.

2.
From the File menu, select Publish Settings…, select the Formats tab, and ensure that Flash and HTML are the only options selected (this is the default). Click OK. (See Figure 18.1.)

Figure 18.1. Publish Settings lets you specify what kind of files will be created every time you publish. The default simply exports a Flash .swf and the HTML that holds it.

3.
Select Publish from the File menu. What happened? Nothing much seems to appear, but if you go look inside your Test folder, you should find (in addition to your source .fla) two files—one .swf and one .html. Both have the same base name as your original .fla file. If you double-click the HTML file, you'll launch your default browser and see your movie play! (For some reason, seeing a movie in a browser is exciting to many people.)

4.
If you simply upload the .html and .swf files to a Web server, anyone can see your movie, provided he or she is given the address and has the Flash player.
