Motion Effects

Filmmakers communicate in myriad ways. Themes are communicated through dialog, character action, staging, pacing, and even color. The movie The Cooler, for example, communicates the current mental state of the protagonist (played by William H. Macy) through his clothes. When his luck is bad, his suit is loose and frumpy. When his luck starts to turn around and he falls in love, his suit fits perfectly and he looks like a million bucks. At one point during the metamorphosis he stands in front of a sign inside a casino that says “Change” in bright, neon letters. The sign is just part of the background, but the way it integrates into the scene helps capture the moment.
