10. Loading Assets On the Fly > 10.1. Using Actionscript To Modularize Content

Using Actionscript To Modularize Content

One way to modularize a Flash project is to create separate movies for each part, or module, of your project and load each one as it’s needed. Another way is to keep bitmaps external to your Flash document, loading them dynamically while the published movie is running. For now, we’ll focus on the latter.

Loading Bitmaps On the Fly

Let’s start our problem-solving journey by working with ActionScript’s loadMovie() command, which despite its name can also be used to load external bitmaps (provided they’re in non-progressive JPEG format). This command works all the way back to Flash Player 3, so it can be relied upon when creating content for users with older versions of the Flash Player.
