Chapter 6. Microphone and Camera

Flash movies can capture live audio and video from a microphone and camera attached to the user's computer using the Camera and Microphone classes. However, to share live audio and video content with other users, you need to publish the audio and video streams to a FlashCom application. You can use this feature to conduct live audio/video conferences with several online users or to monitor remote locations. You can also script your Flash movie to record live audio and video directly to the FlashCom application.

Generally, the Flash .swf file must be Flash Player 6 format or later (and played in Flash Player 6 or higher) to publish camera and microphone content. However, not all devices have built-in support for all features. For example, publishing audio from the Pocket PC requires an external microphone attached to the unit. As you'll learn later in this chapter, you can check the Camera.names property to determine if the user has a recognized video capture (or camera) driver.
