Components

Components are special pre-built movie clips, and have a number of editable parameters and properties. Components speed up development, and at the same time provide shareable resources, such as code and interface graphics, in a neat little package.

→ For more details on components, see Chapter 19, “Components.”

The components that come with Flash fall into three categories:

  • Data components

  • Media components

  • User Interface components

Data components allow you to connect to outside resources such as web services, databases, and XML files to create a flexible, data-driven Flash application. Data components are not visual; that is to say, they do not appear as a graphic in the published piece. Media Components are designed to work with MP3 audio files and Flash Live Video (FLV) video files. User Interface components are just that: user interface items such as pull-down menus, text areas, calendars, and menu bars, that allow you to quickly develop a user driven interface.

You can find these components in the Component panel. To add a component to your Flash piece, select and drag the component from the Component panel and drop it anywhere on the Stage.
