Chapter 18. The Movie Clip Symbol > Movie Clip Timelines

Movie Clip Timelines

Movie Clip timelines, as I've mentioned, are completely independent from the main document timeline. What that means for us as designers of an application is that we can nest animations in the main timeline, such as animated pull-down menus, without affecting the other content on the Stage. It also gives us a way to add interactive elements, create more complex navigation, create sound toggles, and a whole host of other things.

Because the main Stage is also a movie clip, the movie clip timeline is identical to the main document timeline. The only real difference is the size of the Stage; inside a movie clip symbol, there is no work area. Apart from that, the layer panel is the same and the timeline is the same. You can add ActionScript to frames or buttons, and you can add other movie clips to layers and frames as well.
