Chapter 18. The Movie Clip Symbol > Movie Clips Symbols Explained

Movie Clips Symbols Explained

In Macromedia Flash, the Movie Clip symbol is the true workhorse of any application that you're going to build. In fact, the symbol is the foundation for your application; your Stage is actually a Movie Clip whose properties and capabilities have been hidden. Movie Clips are ActionScript objects, and can be controlled, made, and removed by ActionScript, in addition to being created visually. Movie clips can hold anything that your main timeline can hold, and can contain ActionScript, or have ActionScript written directly on them.

We use Movie Clips to create nested animations, to respond to user-driven events, to hold assets so that we can reuse them without adding file size, and to add interactivity to our Flash Applications. They're without a doubt the most versatile object in Flash (well, besides the generic Object object).
