Macromedia Flash introduced a new way of doing things on the web. Not only did it allow you to add vector graphics and animations to a web site, but it really gave designers a way to free themselves from the restrictive environment of HTML and pursue more lofty goals. With the ability to animate and add interactivity in a lightweight file format, designers quickly started creating usable interfaces that made web sites much more than look-up tools or glorified brochures.
