Shared Libraries and Symbols

In addition to storing assets, items in a document's library can be shared, either while authoring, or when the file runs. These are referred to as author time and runtime sharing, respectively. This way, you can centralize certain assets, such as business logos, and update numerous files without having to republish numerous SWFs.

If you are going to use shared symbols, it's a best practice to keep them all in one location, meaning a file dedicated to nothing but shared symbols. Symbols that are designated for runtime sharing will have to be published in an SWF that must be located on the web server, and symbols designated for author time sharing must be in an FLA file somewhere on your network.
