Chapter 8. Laying Out Your Project > Creating a Template

Creating a Template

In Chapter 4, “The Structure of Flash MX 2004,” we glanced quickly at the templates that come with Flash, and quickly discussed making your own. In this chapter we're going to pay a little more attention to it.

When talking about creating a template, we're talking about saving a Flash editable file (with the .FLA extension) on our hard drive and in a special directory. When we build new documents from that file, we're essentially doing a glorified copy and paste; the original document is untouched, but the document we build from it will inherit all the master document's assets. In Flash, unlike in Dreamweaver, all parts of the document built from the template are editable.
