Chapter 10. Layers and the Timeline > Adding and Removing Layers

Adding and Removing Layers

To insert a layer, you can do one of three things: select Insert > Timeline > Layer, select the Insert Layer button in the lower left corner of the Layer pane, or Control-click on a layer name, and choose Insert Layer from the Context menu. When you add a new layer, it will appear above whatever layer is currently selected. To delete a layer, select the layer, and click the Delete Layer button in the lower right corner of the Layer pane, drag the layer into the trash can icon on the Layer pane or right- or Control-click on the layer name, and select Delete Layer from the Context menu.

To view a layer's properties, double-click on the Layer Type button next to the name, right or control click on the layer and choose Properties from the Context menu, or select Modify > Timeline > Layer Properties. In the Layer Properties dialog box, you can change the name of the layer, and select whether it is shown or locked. In addition, you can change the layer type, the outline color of objects on the layer when Show Outlines is selected, and whether the objects on the layer will be shown as outlines. You can also adjust the layer height.
