Chapter 16. Graphic and Font Symbols > Editing a Graphic Symbol

Editing a Graphic Symbol

Graphic Symbols, like all symbols in Flash, have their own timelines that are tied to the main document timeline, their own layer panels, and their own set of X and Y coordinates.Inthe graphic symbol's timeline, you can add layers, import graphics, draw your own graphics, and add text assets if you want. You can even add animations, but it isn't recommended, since the graphic symbol is dependent on and uses the main document's timeline, as well in the next section.

After you have added assets to a new graphic symbol, or converted an asset to a graphic symbol, you can edit the contents of the symbol by double-clicking the symbol icon in the library, or by double-clicking the symbol on the Stage. Both of these methods will take you into symbol editing mode, with one very big difference; double-clicking a graphic symbol on the Stage opens the symbol definition in what's called Edit in Place Mode. Any change you make here (in normal symbol editing mode) makes a change to the master properties of the symbol. Ultimately, that means all instances of the symbol being used on the Stage will also be affected. Their individual instance properties, however, will be maintained.
