Chapter 17. Button Symbols > Creating More Complex Buttons

Creating More Complex Buttons

Buttons can be as complex and rich as any graphic in Flash. For starters, button timelines can support multiple layers, the same as any timeline. You can use layering to make a more interesting and visually compelling button. To insert a layer in a button from its timeline, click the Add Layer icon in the Layer panel, or choose Insert > Timeline > Layer. Then add your graphics to keyframes in the appropriate state.

Sounds can also be added to buttons; these are most often used for “click” sounds. As a best practice, sounds should occupy their own layers in a button. To add the sound, add a keyframe to the appropriate state (most often Over or Down), and drag a sound out of the library and anywhere on the Stage with the keyframe highlighted. You won't see a visual representation of the sound on the Stage, but you should see a little oscillation pattern in the keyframe.
