Preloaders

When you're delivering Flash content over the web, preloaders are a must. A preloader mitigates extended download times by providing the end user with information about the progress of the download, or by otherwise letting them know that something is in fact happening. When you've broken a project up into multiple SWFs, and are loading them into target Movie Clips or levels in the Flash Player, preloaders are a must for every SWF loading in.

There are multiple ways to create preloaders. Many people create an animation in a Movie Clip, and place an instance of the Movie Clip in the first frame of the movie. The remaining content for the movie begins on the second frame. You use an ActionScript to make the Movie Clip instance play until the SWF is fully loaded. When the SWF is fully loaded, the Movie Clip stops playing and the movie progresses. Other methods for making preloaders include using scenes, or building a preloader in a completely different SWF.
