Using Trace Bitmap

Occasionally, it's useful to convert bitmap artwork into vector artwork. This is usually done on simple bitmap files that don't contain a lot of colors, tones, or gradients, and is almost always done to save file size or to produce interesting visual effects. Generally speaking, vector artwork has a smaller file size burden, though that's not always true. The more vector objects you have to create a single cohesive image, the bigger your file size is going to be. When we convert bitmap artwork into vector artwork, similar colors are grouped together as a single color and a single vector object.

To convert a bitmap object on the Stage to vector art, select the image with the pointer tool, then select Modify > Bitmap > Trace Bitmap. The Trace Bitmap dialog box will appear. The dialog box options and what they do are summarized in the Table 11.1.
