Chapter 6. Managing Outside Communication > Communicating with the Printer

Communicating with the Printer

Flash can send information directly to a printer to output text and graphics, circumventing the Web browser’s print function. Printing Flash content is handled by the PrintJob class. With the PrintJob class, you can specify a level or movie clip to print, and you can also control which areas should be printed for the specific level or movie clip. The printable areas do not even have to be visible on the Stage. Graphics and text in any frame in the main Timeline of the movie or any frame of a movie clip’s Timeline are available to the printer, making the PrintJob object more than a simple tool for making hard copies of what is visible on the computer screen.

Imagine, for example, that you have documents in external SWF files. You easily could load a particular movie into a movie clip or into another level with the action loadMovie and then print selected frames from that loaded movie.
