Chapter 7. Controlling the Movie Clip > Setting the Movie-Clip Properties

Setting the Movie-Clip Properties

Many movie-clip properties—size, transparency, position, rotation, and quality— define how the movie looks. By using the action setProperty or by using dot syntax, you can target any movie clip and change any of those characteristics during playback. Table 7.1 summarizes properties that are available from the action setProperty. A few of these properties affect the entire movie, not just a single movie clip.

Properties Available Through setProperty
Property Value Description
_alpha (Alpha) A number from 0 to 100 Specifies the alpha transparency, where 0 is totally transparent and 100 is opaque.
_visible (Visibility) true or false Specifies whether a movie clip can be seen.
_name (Name) A string-literal name Specifies a new instance name of the movie clip.
_rotation (Rotation) A number Specifies the degree of rotation in a clockwise direction from the 12 o’clock position. A value of 45, for example, tips the movie clip to the right.
_width (Width) A number in pixels Specifies the horizontal dimension.
_height (Height) A number in pixels Specifies the vertical dimension.
_x (X Position) A number in pixels Specifies the horizontal position of the movie clip’s registration point.
_y (Y Position) A number in pixels Specifies the vertical position of the movie clip’s registration point.
_xscale (X Scale) A number Specifies the percentage of the original movie-clip symbol’s horizontal dimension.
_yscale (Y Scale) A number Specifies the percentage of the original movie-clip symbol’s vertical dimension.
_focusrect (Show focus rectangle) true or false Determines whether a yellow rectangle appears around objects as you use the Tab key to select objects.
_highquality (High quality) A number 0, 1, or 2 Specifies the level of antialiasing for playback of the movie. 2 = best: antialiasing and bitmap smoothing. 1 = high: antialiasing and bitmap smoothing if there is no animation. 0 = low: no antialiasing. This property is a global property that affects the entire movie, rather than a single movie clip. This property is also considered to be deprecated.
_quality (Quality) LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, or BEST Specifies the level of antialiasing for playback of the movie. BEST = antialiasing and bitmap smoothing. HIGH = antialiasing and bitmap smoothing if there is no animation. MEDIUM = lower-quality antialiasing. LOW = no antialiasing. This property is a global property that affects the entire movie, rather than a single movie clip.
_soundbuftime (Sound buffer time) A number Specifies the number of seconds before the movie begins to stream sound. The default value is 5. This property is a global property that affects the entire movie, rather than a single movie clip.
