Chapter 10. Controlling Text > The Selection Object

The Selection Object

The Selection object controls the selection of characters in text fields. Unlike most objects, the Selection object doesn’t need a constructor function to be instantiated before you can use it, because there can be only one insertion-point position or selection in a Flash movie at a time. So the Selection object will always refer to that one position or selection.

The methods of the Selection object affect a text field in two ways: It can control which text field is currently active, or focused, and it can control where the insertion point is positioned within that text field. Table 10.3 summarizes the methods of the Selection object.
