Lesson 3. Using Symbols and the Library > Opening an Existing Movie as a Librar...

Opening an Existing Movie as a Library

You are not limited to using the internal library of a Flash movie; you can open other Flash movie libraries by using the Open As Library command (File > Open As Library). You can drag items from one library to another, or you can drag items onto the stage.

1.
Choose File > Open as Library. When the Open As Library dialog box opens, browse to the Lesson03/Assets folder, and select the assets.fla file. Click Open.

The library for assets.fla opens. If you have not moved your original Library window, the new window might open on top of the old one. Just drag the new window until you can see both windows. Notice that the newly opened assets.fla library is gray, which indicates that it is not the current library for the file you are editing.

2.
Select the Baby Blue Background symbol in the Background Graphics folder of the assets.fla library. Drag the symbol to the Background Graphics folder in the neptune11.fla Library window.

Make sure that you look for the name of the library before you start dragging. The name appears across the top of the window. Each Library window that you open is named after its movie.

The Baby Blue Background symbol should appear indented below the Background Graphics folder.

3.
Repeat step 2 for Diver Graphic, Reservations Graphic, and World Map, placing each of these symbols in the Background Graphics folder of the neptune11.fla library.

The Background Graphics folder should now contain several symbols and bitmaps.

4.
Drag the Whale Shark symbol from the Header Graphics folder in the assets.fla library into the Header Graphics folder of the neptune11.fla library.

If you can't see a file, make sure that the folders in the assets.fla library are open by double-clicking them.

You've just added another symbol to the Header Graphics folder.

5.
Close the assets.fla Library window. Make sure that the Library window for neptune11.fla is still open, because you're going to use it again. Save your movie.

When you're done using a library, it's a good idea to close it so that it doesn't get in the way.
