Lesson 2. Using Graphics and Text > Converting Bitmaps to Vectors

Converting Bitmaps to Vectors

One problem with bringing bitmaps into Flash is that they can substantially increase the size of the movie file. And because they are raster rather than vector graphics, you can't edit them in the same way that you'd edit a native vector graphic. In addition, bitmaps don't scale well. Fortunately, Flash lets you convert bitmaps to vector graphics by using the Trace Bitmap command.

Before you start converting every bitmap in sight to a vector graphic, you need to be aware of a few caveats. Complex images are not good candidates for converting to vector graphics unless you plan to reduce the number of colors substantially. (You would do this by increasing the Color Threshold. This change can produce an interesting “painterly” effect.)
