Lesson 6. Adding Basic Interactivity > Using Actions to Control the Timeline

Using Actions to Control the Timeline

You're ready to start adding some interactivity to your Flash movie. You'll start by adding a couple of Stop actions. This may sound like un-interactivity, but it's a good first step.

1.
Open neptune26.fla in the Lesson06/Assets folder.

This file is very much like the movie you ended up with in Lesson 5, but it contains a few more frames and keyframes, some additional symbols, and a better-organized library.

2.
Choose Control > Test Movie.

When the test movie appears, your almost-finished Neptune Resorts site opens. The site looks great, but right now it just flips through each of the sections very quickly. You need to add some actions to prevent that from happening.

3.
Close the test-movie window. In neptune26.fla, add a new layer to your movie. Name the layer Actions and Labels, and drag it to the top of the layer stacking order.

It's a good idea to keep all your frame actions in the same layer. This practice makes troubleshooting and editing much simpler.

4.
At frame 15 of the Actions and Labels layer, insert a keyframe. Select the keyframe, and open the Actions panel.

You're going to add an action to this keyframe.

5.
In the Actions panel's toolbox list, double-click the Stop action.

The Stop action is added to the actions list.

6.
In the Actions and Labels layer, insert keyframes at frames 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40. Add a Stop action to each keyframe. Choose Control > Test Movie.

When the movie plays, it should now stop at frame 15. You'll add more ActionScript later in this chapter to make the movie jump to the other sections of the site.

7.
Save your movie in the MyWork folder as neptune27.fla.

In the following section, you add buttons to the movie to make it jump to the various sections of your site.
