Chapter 1. Why Flash? > Integration

Integration

Powerful as Flash is, it needs a bit of outside help for more advanced projects such as chat functionality or shopping-cart systems (for e-commerce). Flash can easily communicate with Web application servers such as ASP and Cold Fusion or work with CGI scripts written in Perl, PHP, or other Web scripting languages. And let's not forget about its ability to communicate with the browser via JavaScript. Flash's tight integration with these technologies makes it possible for you to process information within your movie (for example, entered into form elements), display dynamic text from a database, or make your movie react to information it receives from a Web server.

As if that weren't enough, Flash can now work with XML data as well. For developers, this ability to transmit and receive structured XML data over a constant open server connection is a dream come true, facilitating multiplayer games, real-time chat, and a wide range of other sophisticated applications in the Flash universe. In a word, wow!
