Creating Symbols

When you begin to create symbols, it's important to keep in mind that you're essentially producing a movie element with its own timeline. Sometimes that timeline runs in conjunction with the main timeline (that is, it stops when the main timeline stops), and sometimes it runs independently (that is, it continues playing after the main timeline has stopped). You work with a symbol's timeline—which has its own set of layers—in much the same way you would the main timeline. A little later we'll examine each type of symbol's timeline. First, however, we're going to teach you how to create symbols.

General Symbol Creation

Flash offers a couple of ways to create symbols: You can convert stage (or main timeline) content into symbols, or you can create a blank, or empty, symbol, which you later fill with content. Each approach offers advantages.
