Chapter 3. Modifying Simple Graphics > Selecting Partial Elements

Selecting Partial Elements

Sometimes, you want to select just a portion of a line segment, curve, or shape. You can use the arrow tool to draw a rectangle that selects just a slice of an element. The lasso tool and polygon lasso tool are particularly good for this task, because they can select various-shaped portions.

To select part of a line or outline:

1.
Select the arrow, lasso, or polygon lasso tool.

2.
To make a selection, do one of the following:

  • With the arrow tool, click and drag out a rectangle that encloses just a piece of the line or outline, and release the mouse button (Figure 3.12).

Figure 3.12. The arrow tool creates a selection rectangle that selects a portion of this oval.

  • With the lasso, draw a shape that encloses just a piece of the line or outline (Figure 3.13).

Figure 3.13. The lasso tool (or polygon lasso) gives you greater freedom to select a particular arc of the oval.

  • With the polygon lasso, create a series of line segments that enclose just a piece of the line or outline, and double-click to close the shape.

Flash highlights only what was inside the rectangle or the shape drawn with the lasso.
