Chapter 5. Graphics on Multiple Layers > Controlling Layers via the Timeline

Controlling Layers via the Timeline

The Timeline represents each layer as a horizontal field containing the layer name and three buttons for controlling the way the layer's contents look on the Stage. You can hide a layer (making all the elements on that layer temporarily invisible), lock a layer (making the contents visible but uneditable), and view the items on the layer as outlines. These controls are helpful when you are editing numerous items on several layers.

To rename a layer:

1.
In the Timeline, double-click the layer name.

Flash activates the text-entry field for the layer name.

2.
Type a new name.

3.
Press Enter, or click anywhere outside the name field.
