Detecting the Plug-In

Several techniques are used to manage detection of the Flash Plug-in. The simplest involve self-selection; the most complex use scripting languages. This section will discuss the reasoning behind using one over another and will provide you with a scheme for using Flash to accomplish plug-in detection.

The simplest technique is to allow the user to self-select. In this scenario, the user is presented with a basic HTML page with a link for both a Flash version and a non-Flash version of the site. This assumes that users know whether or not they have the plug-in. Many average users probably do not know, so this is not necessarily the best choice.
