Brush Effects

The Brush tool is very powerful for creating freehand graphics. On this splash page it is used for the free-form shadows from the photo and the button.

Creating the Shadow for the Button and Photo

  1. Create a new layer and call it "Shadows." Make sure it is selected.

  2. Click and drag the Shadows layer above the Photo layer if it is not already there.

  3. Change to the Brush tool.

  4. Choose Paint Normal for the Brush Mode. Choose the fifth brush size in the list, shown in Figure 5–29.

  5. Use the round brush shape. Use black for the Fill Color (see Figure 5–30).

  6. Make sure you are in the Shadows layer.

  7. Draw a shadow shape next to the button.

  8. Draw shadow shape next to the photo. Figures 5–31 and 5–32 show the shadows against a white movie background so you can see the shapes more clearly. The edges will be softened later.
