Conclusion

This chapter has offered a number of examples in which actor-network theory has provided a means by which adoption or non-adoption of technology can be explained. Situations that have arisen include:

  • The desire of the general manager of the storage and transport business to adopt the portal so as to support development of the local region.

  • The publishing company’s reluctance to adopt more e-commerce technologies as their business partners did not use them, and they did not have the time.

  • The accountancy firm not setting up a web site because they really just did not understand what was going on.
