Chapter XIV. Security Management in an E... > Security Policy, Procedures, and Pra...

Security Policy, Procedures, and Practices

In order to ward off security breaches in the e-business environment, organizations need to put in place a security policy, procedures and practices code, and have a good understanding of the capabilities of available security technologies.

Security Policy

It is essential that all e-business organizations put in place a security policy at the time of implementation of technologies that will support the on-line business. A security policy is a documented high-level plan for organization wide computer and information security (Minoli & Minoli, 1998). It provides a framework for making specific decisions, such as which defence mechanisms to use and how to configure services, and is the basis for developing secure programming guidelines and procedures for users and system administrators to follow. Because a security policy is a long-term document, the contents avoid technology-specific issues.
