Typical E-Business Ethical Dilemmas

Cyberpirates

While not as pressing an issue now as a few years ago, Cyberpirates are still operating. Cyberpirates register well-known trademarks for business or financial gain. While traditionally, more than one business can use a trade name (with certain restrictions), on the net only one domain name can be registered (as it is an ’address’). The opportunity to make some money will always be pursued by some, and as established business made the move to an on-line environment, these opportunists registered the names of those established companies as domain names.

Maury and Kleiner (2002) note that while action can be taken in some cases (such as Hasbro vs Candyland where a pornography site deliberately used the word Candyland in its address to gain site traffic), at other times it may not be successful because the ’cyberpirate’ may have a legitimate use for that domain name.
