Chapter 17. Transaction Processing > Overview of Transaction Processing

Overview of Transaction Processing

Functions performed by Internet commerce applications, such as sales and returns, are quite complex. Each function is composed of several other activities. For example, a sale event might include the following activities.

  • Debit buyer's account.[2]

[2] From a database point of view, debiting an account is itself a complex operation involving three separate steps: reading the old balance, subtracting the debit, and storing back the new balance.

  • Credit seller's account.

  • Record event for business records.

  • Transmit order to fulfillment center.

  • Issue receipt to buyer.
