Design Principles of the Internet

The Internet has been successful because of some fundamental decisions about its design that were made early in its history. These decisions are often invisible to the end user, and even to application developers, but understanding them provides insight into why the network is the way it is. In addition, we often find that such insight helps in making choices about building new applications. Even when such applications seem far removed from the core design principles of the Internet, those that match the spirit of the Internet design are more likely to succeed than those that do not.
