The Future of the Internet: Protocol Evolution

Like other technologies, the Internet is evolving quickly, and changes are inevitable. Although many of the core principles remain the same, the details will be different. All of the technologies mentioned in this chapter are changing to some degree.

TCP/IP is evolving with the development of IPv6, the next generation of the Internet Protocol. IPv6 builds on the long experience with IP (which is officially version 4) and provides improvements in scalability, security, and support for real-time media. Because it changes the fundamental protocols of the Internet, it will be quite some time before the entire Internet is running IPv6, although many IPv6 products are on the market today. In fact, some of the security technology developed for IPv6 is also being deployed for use with the current version of IP.
