Summary

This chapter has discussed the important aspects of designing a system for Internet commerce. Although these issues are common to the design of many kinds of computer applications, they are especially important for Internet commerce applications. Of course, different applications will ultimately have different designs that are appropriate for the requirements and architectural approaches chosen for those projects. Even though the answers may be different in each case, any successful design must confront these problems at one point or another.

With these basic principles in mind, we now turn to more detailed descriptions of some of the main technology areas for Internet commerce. Throughout the succeeding chapters, the principles and design issues discussed in this chapter form the backdrop for how the technologies fit into an overall system for Internet commerce.
