Chapter 10. System Design > The Problem of Design

The Problem of Design

The chapters to come will examine many of the key technology areas for developing systems for Internet commerce. A logical question, of course, is “How do they go together?” In this chapter, we consider the problem of design: given a set of components, how do we put them together to create the most effective solution? Although we are saving details of the components for later, the discussion in this chapter is intended to frame an understanding of the role each component plays in the overall system.

From a software engineering point of view, there are many possible design methodologies to use. Such techniques as object-oriented design, rapid prototyping, formal methods, extreme programming, and so on can all be used in the design of Internet commerce systems. We do not advocate any particular method or set of methods. The methods appropriate for your team depend on your own views and experience, the views and experience of the team, the tools available to you, and many other factors.
