Example: SAP Integration

In this example, we describe a sell-side Internet commerce system integrated with an SAP R/3 Release 4.5B ERP system. Although the SAP software systems include a variety of Internet and Web capabilities, we assume that a non-SAP Internet commerce system has been specified.

Recent versions of SAP R/3 have many externally accessible APIs, including both asynchronous messages (intermediate documents, or IDOCs) and synchronous calls (business APIs, or BAPIs). The SAP Remote Function Call communications software can be used to permit a remote system to call any function module within SAP, but SAP has also supplied a large number of BAPI calls in an effort to provide standard interfaces that will remain stable across software releases.
