Chapter 18. Integration with Enterprise ... > The Details Behind the Scenes

The Details Behind the Scenes

Internet commerce systems usually do not stand by themselves. They connect with, feed, and are fed by many other software applications in the enterprise, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and other applications. This chapter does not delve into the inner workings of such applications, but it does address middleware and other technologies that aid in the integration of Internet systems with the rest of the business.

This chapter introduces several commerce issues, such as taxes, logistics, and inventory management, that must be addressed in a complete system for Internet commerce. Internet systems that merely accepting orders may be able to avoid these concerns, but there are few alternatives for systems that must guarantee availability, display accurate prices, and meet legal obligations for payment of taxes.
