Summary

Unlike many systems based on information technology, systems for Internet commerce depend on client software and server software that may be supplied by different vendors and operated by different organizations but still must interoperate across an open network. This chapter has focused on basic client and server technologies, digital goods fulfillment, and a brief survey of object technologies. These components provide the basic wiring and Internet infrastructure for commerce systems. The chapters that follow discuss the architecture of Internet commerce systems and the various supporting technologies such as cryptography, security, and transaction processing.
