Chapter 9. Building Blocks for Internet ... > Components in an Internet Commerce S...

Components in an Internet Commerce System

The building blocks of Internet commerce are the technologies of the World Wide Web: its protocols, browsers, and servers, along with application development structures such as Java, ActiveX, and CGI. This chapter begins with a look at the basic content machinery of the Web and then surveys the protocols and mechanisms for getting content to the user. We then turn to current technologies for building content pages at the server and the evolving technologies for adding programmability to the browser. We conclude with a look at the changes in basic Web technology that are important for adding commerce facilities to the Web.
