Memo to the CEO

SCM is more than the latest craze; it's the new way to do business. Supply chain excellence requires an effective strategy, sustained management commitment, and changes in a company's attitude, culture, and organizational structure. Often, these actions must be undertaken simultaneously, making the supply chain implementation even more difficult. The participants must remember throughout the implementation process that the ability to integrate and to deploy SCM solutions is critical to remaining competitive.

However, the bewildering rate of technological change perplexes most managers, hindering supply chain initiatives. As a result, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers everywhere are reflecting on their roles within the supply chain and what changes to it would mean for them. Technology is not the only process variable that is changing. Competitive pressures, regulatory issues, pricing, and promotions, as well as causal factors ranging from demand origination to channel constraints, all contribute to a dynamic supply chain environment.
