Memo to the CEO

Peter Drucker noted, "A time of turbulence is a dangerous time, but its greatest danger is the temptation to deny reality."[15] Most executives recognize that they must leave past practices behind. They realize that a tollbooth is at the entrance to the new economy. Not all firms will be able to pay the toll, because it requires a new type of currency—e-business leadership. Admission will not be granted to firms that hold steadfast to yesterday's assumptions and practices.

With large-scale technological and environmental change, companies in all business sectors are faced with the same basic questions: How should we compete in our industry? What are our important objectives? How do we achieve long-term focus in an increasingly competitive and sometimes downright hostile business and technology environment?
