Memo to the CEO

Business as usual. Let's be realistic and not fool ourselves about the difficulty of the task that lies ahead. To succeed in the digital economy, we must design our business soundly for the long term to take on competitive challenges, bring in new customers, and keep old customers happy, while maintaining a smooth operation.

Organizations have to eliminate a number of barriers before they are ready to use e-business for competitive advantage. One barrier is that old ways of doing business powered by legacy applications seem to live on forever within companies, leaving not so much an efficient business architecture as a graveyard of computing. The problems posed by legacy infrastructure are clearly illustrated by the Y2K problem.
