The New Era of Cross-Functional Integrated Apps

The success of e-business strategies depends on management's proficiency in creating next-generation services on a software foundation. So getting such e-services out the door on schedule must be routine for companies, right? Not quite. For most managers, software development still resembles witchcraft: Product requirements are provided, magic happens, and software is produced. This type of thinking needs to change if e-business designs, which are built primarily on software, are to ever see the light of the day.

What sets the adept minority of successful e-business companies apart from the rest? The successful companies have all learned to deal with the technical and marketplace uncertainties. That is, they have learned how to overcome the chaos in their e-product-development processes by embracing application frameworks. That is, various companies can independently design and produce application modules, such as ERP or CRM, and those modules will be molded to fit together into a complex, smoothly functioning product.
