Part VI: Store-Building Tips and Details > Home-Brewed Store-Building

Chapter 24. Home-Brewed Store-Building

Home-brewed store sites (Tronix is a fine example) are essentially personally built stores that don't use a store-building service or use a high-end commerce server. Instead, you build out your store in much the same way as a traditional Web site, and then, as dictated by budget and demand, you add an order form, use a shopping cart system, add credit card processing, and more. The result is a lot of flexibility in dictating how your store looks without spending the big bucks on a dedicated server and higher-end commerce server software.

In this chapter, we walk you through building a Web store using the home-brewed approach with which the Tronix site was built. We've decided to use ShopSite, a really good shopping cart solution available from OpenMarket and supported by a number of major Web hosting companies, such as Hiway.com. We recommend some other systems to use as well, since ShopSite might not be your personal preference. Joe uses ShopSite and recommends it highly.
