Knowing Which Items Are Hot

You should know better than anyone which items are going to sell and which aren't. If you don't, you probably won't be in business very long. There are a number of ways to stay on top of industry trends. You can read trade and non-trade magazines, stay on top of the relevant newsgroups, and do your best to attend consumer and trade shows. You should also visit the Web sites of the company whose products you are selling. Calling a company that has a product you want to sell and asking for names of distributors is the easiest and fastest way to get hooked into the network of distributors serving a particular store type.

Magazines

You would be hard-pressed to find an industry that doesn't have a trade magazine. You would also be hard-pressed to find a successful merchant who didn't at least scan that industry's trade magazine. If you aren't sure what your industry's trade magazine is, go to a search engine on the Web and look for information on your industry's trade association.
