Chapter 17. Shipping > Reinforcing the Shipping Link

Reinforcing the Shipping Link

As you prepare to launch your online store, it's to your advantage to set up all of your shipping accounts ahead of time—even if there is a service you don't plan to use immediately, it may be useful in the long run. You also want to know everything you can ahead of time because you never know when a particular shipper may offer the only way to get a product into the hands of a die-hard customer. For example, you should check with each courier about pick-up and drop-off times. In some large cities like New York, not all of the drop-off offices close at the same time. Knowing this ahead of time could be crucial to getting out an order at the last second—and it's this kind of attention to detail that will win you rave reviews by your customers on the Internet.

As this chapter stated at the outset, shipping is the physical link between you and your customers when everything else is so virtual. As the 1997 UPS strike showed, shipping is one of the most important aspects of many businesses, online stores included. Don't make the mistake of treating it as anything short of critical.
